Now that Michael Jackson bought the farm, I hear nothing but his music all day every day. I know this sounds like one of my smart ass exaggerations, but I’m serious. Every taxi cab. Every radio station. Every market with DVDs and CDs. Every construction site. Every bus. I’m at Dama’s house right now, the window is open, and guess what I hear wafting in from the streets below?

I can attest that it does in fact taste like chicken, and the meat even looks like chicken. The way he describes it is definitely the way I was served it- the whole guinea pig, sans intestines.

DP Review (finally) has a 31 page Canon 7D review up:

The EOS 7D is an excellent addition to Canon’s range of APS-C DSLRs that is, in terms of build quality, speed of operation, ergonomics and image quality, a cut above Canon’s previous APS-C flagship, the EOS 50D.

In some respects the 7D is even a better camera than the EOS 5D Mark II and a viable alternative for all those who do not want or need a camera with a full-frame sensor.

The EOS 7D’s specification and current pricing make it also look very good next to its most direct competitor in the enthusiast bracket of the market, the Nikon D300S. It offers a higher nominal resolution and maximum sensitivity, better movie mode specification and slightly faster continuous shooting speed than its Nikon rival; but having said that, in many ways the two cameras are not too dissimilar, and it will be down to personal taste and probably your lens collection if you prefer one over the other.

I’ve been waiting for a comprehensive 7D review, as, up until now, reviews have been fairly limited and not up to the DP Review par. And the things that DPR has to say are the things I wanted to hear about the 7D. Sounds like Canon got it right this time, and I’m stoked to see that they made good on the 50D screw up. Starting to seem like a viable body upgrade for me.

So here’s the deal, readers-

I decided to get a suit. Some people might think this is a bit strange- why the hell would I get a suit when I just work on construction sites and rarely participate in formal functions? The answer to that is simply cost. I’ve bought two suits before, both cheap department store things (one was Men’s Warehouse). Not to say they are not bad suits, but… well, they’re bad suits. Mostly, I’ve just reached a higher level of fashion taste. Why, you ask? Because this three piece I just bought is hand tailored from 100% wool Italian fabric. And it’s bad as hell. I can’t tell you how comfortable it is. The tailors measured me and cut the suit to fit perfectly- all things I can’t say about the previous two suits I’ve owned. And it’s three piece. Need to be a baller/shot caller/badass/wallstreet CEO/hip-hop mogul? No problem- it’s got a vest. Need to tone down the power and respect levels? It’s cool- just take that vest off. It’s like I bought two suits, man.

And this… are you ready for this? 250 USD. You heard me. Two fifty. 740 Peruvian soles- about the average monthly pay. Can you imagine spending a month’s US pay on a suit? Uh… let me think about it… NO.

Bottom line? Excellent deal. I’m just a little bit excited about it.
Also, as an afterthought I realize that brown and gray do not in any way work together, but I have no other collared shirts or shoes here, so I just used what I had.

Juan Miguel and I keeping it classy at the Arequipa food festival. And by classy, I mean we went around and sampled as much free Pisco and wine as we could at every vendor booth possible all night. This particular vendor was Paz Soldan, a local high end Pisco retailer, and we had samples of like 4 different piscos out of little plastic half shot cups.

Classy, indeed.

More US troops dead in Afghanistan:

I feel like the media is really blatantly serving the Obama Admin since he arrived in office. I know I’m not the only one who feels this way- Obama himself said that he felt like the media was too easy on him. But I really feel as if it’s more and more blatant of late, with Obama talking about sending more troops to Afghanistan. The wars in the middle east make too much money for too many influential people, and they are too important for so many other reasons to the ruling elite to actually put them to an end. Obama is portrayed as thoughtful and deliberative on the subject, when in reality we know more troops will be sent to the no win mess over there, and it will continue to grow and make money for war profiteers. Until it happens, the press will continue to beat the White House’s drum and raise support for the eventual descision by really pushing the need for more troops to quell the situation. As soon as Obama began talking about the possibility of more troops, it seems every singe story about Afghanistan I read always includes something about the “need” to send tens of thousands of troops. But we all know it will happen. Really. Think about it right now- will Obama really decide not to send more troops to Afghanistan? Of course not. And when it does happen, think back to his silly pontification and media support over the whole matter, about how unnecessary it all is since we know the outcome. Change my ass. Looks like the last guy to me.

My bro Jon Michael, who lived in Arequipa for 4 months or so, came back into town last Saturday along with his girlfriend Brooke. Naturally, we wanted to hang out and make the most of his 7 days here.
Saturday night, we went to a restaurant near the Plaza de Armas that serves typical Peruvian food. One of my favorite Peruvian dishes is chupe de camarones, a tomato based shrimp soup with potatoes and vegetables. I ordered it up at the place we went to for dinner, as I hadn’t had it in a while. Arequipa is more or less close to the ocean, about 3 hours from fishing ports. I’ve had lots of fish and cheviche here, and never had a problem with it. This time was different.

I’ve had diarrhea since yesterday morning, along with body aches and bad stomach pain. I’ve also become rather dehydrated. And I’m really tired of it.

I couldn’t count on both hands the number of times I’ve gotten sick from food here in Latin America. It never, ever ceases to piss me off. I have no desire to spend the entire day in bed, with occasional visits to the bathroom. I most certainly won’t miss the poor sanitary conditions of the developing world when I go home in December.

Last week, I painted the playground I built with Alan and JM. The kids and teachers at Paz y Esperanza all went nuts over it, as I did it with the color scheme of the Peruvian flag. They love it, for sure. I’m stoked to have gotten it done, to have put on the finishing touches to a really great project. As of now, it’s still the only playground in Horacio Zeballos Gamez.

I chose the color scheme, a scheme that turned out a great choice. Everyone said I must be a Peruvian for painting it so patriotically.

It was actually a slight pain in the ass to paint them, as I had to borrow a bunch of equipment on my day off, buy paint and thinner, deliver the whole mess to Horacio in a cab, and work all afternoon. Getting a cab back to deliver the tools to their respective owners was worse, as there are really no taxis in the remote and underdeveloped community. Eventually, I found one and made my way back into Arequipa. The following week, people went bananas over it. I made it out for a short time during school hours and jumped on the sube y baja and columpios with the kids. Later that week, Dama brought me hand made construction paper thank you cards from all of the 95 kids in the school. The cards made me laugh, for sure, and there were some memorable drawings and silly lines like “keep on triumphing” and “I believe in you,” amongst the expected thank yous.
